Victorian book press on wooden stand by Waterlow

Victorian book press on wooden stand by Waterlow

DescriptionBook press by Waterlow Bros & Layton of London, circa 1880, on its original drop leaf stand with two drawers. Used in the same workshop for many many years, and alongside the die stamp press we are also offering, this press is ready to continue work or equally ready for a life of retirement as a piece of wonderfully evocative decor. Exhibiting the patina of over 125 years use the press itself retains the majority of its black japan and parcel gilt finish: and its brass work and finial, which we have left unpolished, are crisp and unscarred or bruised. The walnut and fruitwood base has the original and distressed cup handles to its drawers (the upper with Bramah type lock but no key), and its side flaps are fully functional with hinged wing supports under - original finish and timber itself also has blemishes, knocks etc consistent with years of use. Although there are signs of historic woodworm (re-treated for surety by us) and there are a pair of ancient iron braces, front to rear, at the base of its legs, the stand is extremely robust and holds itself and the weighty press absolutely firmly. The press itself is demountable but the whole is 47 inches high. The stand alone measures 29 inches high by 16 inches deep and 25 inches wide - or - 45 inches wides with its flaps up. For a more complete history of Waterlows we commend you to search the internet but briefly - Waterlow and Sons Limited was a major worldwide engraver of currency, postage stamps, stocks and bond certificates based in London, Watford and Dunstable in England. The company was founded as a family business in 1810
