Large Iron Victorian Great Western Railway Gate

Large Iron Victorian Great Western Railway Gate

DescriptionSplendid Victorian iron gate salvaged many years ago from the Great Western Railway South Brent to Kingsbridge branch line after it closed. This line ran from the main Penzance to london line station of South Brent to Kingsbridge via Avonwick, Gara Bridge and Lodiswell. Opened in 893 it closed in the early 1960s. For further details of this line, known as the 'Primrose Line', there is information on the internet. This imposing and heavy gate measures approximately 7ft 6in and although unrestored is in very sound condition with minimal rusting. Before hanging it would need the base 'pegging' as its original pivot is long gone (very likely worn out). If cosmetic improvement was sought the top bar would need heating and straightening as well as the tip of one spear redone (both a relatively simple job for a blacksmith or someone with access to gas welding equipment). NB - what may appear to be heavy corrosion in the photos is in fact peeling and flaking layers of paint - red lead over the original GWR cream.
