A delightful and really quite comfortable Windsor scroll back and with maker's 'signature' too. We've gone through Cotton's book on regional chairs but there isn't one like this on any of its 500 or so pages so consider it an unusual design. Some other dealers, one in particular that comes to mind, would treat you to a load of blather about it 'surviving from the zenith of the mid victorian period' - refer to it as 'she' and then list its defects as the icing on the cake of decrepitude before hitting you with a price that would leave any sane connoisseur of the antique reeling in disbelief. We on the other hand won't insult you. It is old - it shows signs of old repairs, knocks, scrapes and abrasions - it is however eminently useable (but not if you are too broad in the beam) - it is £195

This 'waterfall' bookcase is an eminently useful piece of furniture and on account of its size would would be equally at home in virtually any room of the house. It stands 154 cm high and it 80 cm wide. The bottom shelf is a generous 21 cm deep - this reducing in equal increments to the top shelf which is 12 cm deep. The sides are of mahogany whilst the shelves are of beech or a similar coloured wood the whole is finished in a light dusky blue that has rubbed through to the undercoat or even wood itself on some high spots.......£125

Pine 'Knock-down' Wardrobe
English oak chest of drawers from circa 1670 with mitred mouldings, desirable proportions and graduated drawer layout. This splendid chest, which is absolutely quintessential of its period, has come through its 350 odd years with a few minor repairs. Whilst the brass escutcheons are very likely the originals it is fitted with, at least, its third set of brasses (these being of a style some 30 years later than the piece itself). However, importantly, it has the unusual distinction of remaining absolutely rot and worm free. It measures 39 inches in width, 35 inches high and has a depth of a generous 23 inches.
